Camera Calibration and Measurement System Analysis with the EBZ Group

The EBZ Group is an internationally active engineering and plant construction partner, specializing in the automotive industry. The company develops and implements complex manufacturing facilities, tools, and production systems, covering every step from planning to implementation.

For a project with a well-known automotive manufacturer, comprehensive calibration documentation was required for all measuring equipment used. This included camera-based measurement systems, primarily from Keyence. These camera systems were specified by the OEM as standard hardware and were integrated into the systems and commissioned by the EBZ Group.  

Until now, the acceptance of such systems had primarily been based on capability reports in accordance with MSA Procedures 1 and 3. Calibration of Keyence’s image processing systems in this form was not previously known—neither at the EBZ Group nor by the manufacturer itself. However, due to the automotive customer’s requirements, standard-compliant calibration according to DIN EN ISO 10360-7 came into focus. In addition, the suitability of the cameras had to be demonstrated in accordance with VDA Volume 5.3.

Our Services for the EBZ Group 

Testo Industrial Services took on the task of providing comprehensive metrological validation for the integrated Keyence camera systems at short notice and with reliability. Following the prompt contract award, the on-site deployment at the EBZ Group was quickly organized, allowing the necessary work to begin without delay. This also included the creation and coordination of the required calibration references (checkerboard patterns), which were produced and calibrated by partner companies and serve as the basis for the camera-based calibration processes.   

The next step involved the comprehensive calibration of the camera systems directly in their installed state. In addition, proficiency tests were conducted in accordance with standard MSA procedures to verifiably determine the suitability of the systems. For measurement systems that could not meet the required proficiency criteria, we supported the EBZ Group with a thorough analysis and concrete recommendations—including the identification and replacement of an unsuitable system.  

In addition to the technical implementation, consulting played a central role: Testo Industrial Services supported the EBZ Group with all questions regarding imaging test equipment, the initial calibration of new measurement systems, and general test process planning. Thanks to our combined metrological expertise, we were able to not only support the EBZ Group during implementation but also provide the necessary knowledge for future projects.
